The Last Full Time Miller

Dic Roderick of nearby Llanrhystud was employed as miller first from April 1868 for some seven years and then from about 1905 until his retirement in 1920. Incidentally the last remaining public house - Penybont - closed when Dic retired - milling was a thirsty business!

Dic is reputed to have offended the local witch - Mari Berllan-Pitter by refusing to mill a couple of bags of barley late one Saturday evening. She put a curse on the wheel, causing it to turn backwards!

He also had a reputation as a fighter after a few beers and he was usually a winner. Hefting bags of grain and flour were good exercise.
However according to Mr J.G.Jones who died in 2000 aged over 90 years old, Dic was beaten once and his comment afterwards (in Welsh) was - "Every time I hit him he wasn't there!"

There are several photographs of him - always covered in flour dust.
